Born in Arkhangleks, Russia. Alex Gilbert was adopted out of Russia when he was 2 years old in 1994 by his NZ Parents ‘Mark and Janice Gilbert’. Alex’s parents also adopted his brother Andrei who was from the same orphanage.
Alex was raised in the small town of Whangarei until he left in 2011 to study Film and Television in Auckland. Three months after leaving South Seas Film & Television School Alex started working at Choice TV, which at the time was just being established. He also worked on several films including ‘Emperor’ and ‘3 Mile Limit’ in 2012 along with a cooking show that was shot in South Korea and around NZ.
Alex Gilbert started his search for his Birth Parents at the start of 2013 after searching through his old adoption documents. After doing a search online and through several Russian Social Networks he eventually traced his Birth Mother and Birth Father. Alex was followed by TVNZ’s Sunday program during his search and when he went to Russia.
After the story aired in February 2014 Alex finished his book ‘My Russian Side’ and released it in April 2014 as a free download. The physical paperback became available in May 2014.
The book follows Alex’s journey from the first day of the search to when he arrived back to NZ. The book was released later for the Auckland Library after Wheelers Books NZ obtained distribution rights to the book. It has since been released in 20 Libraries including 18 in NZ, 1 in Australia and 1 in Canada.
Alex also supports and helps Inter Country Adoption New Zealand with talks and charity auctions.Born in Arkhangleks, Russia.
