It would be easy to tank this movie, if you do not watch it with a critical eye. The star is old. It is the sixth movie in a recycled brand. What has always made Stallone an easy target is his slurred speech; after all, actors are all supposed to speak like Olivier or Gielgud or Scofield. Never mind the ad hominems. After all, Stallone committed the egregious sin of making his hero face unique problems in each film. No, it is easy to ignore the logic of the dialogue, and easier still to ignore the skill it takes to create irony in a script, an advanced skill most writers would give their eye teeth to command. What are the universals in this story? Unless we die, we will age. If we live a reflective life, we will always have unfinished business. If you have something to do, then do it. Maybe it is easy to argue that a man who wants to accomplish something that would make his life fulfilled is not important, nor dramatic enough to carry a story. . . but then, I remember similar stories: Invictus, Trouble with the Curve, Pride of the Yankees, and It's a Wonderful Life. "Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you." He must have made this movie for me, because I got it.
