That was well worth the wait and I'm so happy to be back and reading new stories about Lyra's world. This first volume of a new trilogy takes place 11 years before The Golden Compass, Lyra is a baby and our hero is 11 year old Malcolm. Malcolm leads an unassuming life working with his parents at the local pub until he becomes acquainted with baby Lyra, a spy, and the danger associated with that knowledge. Malcolm, another girl named Alice, and their daemons end up journeying with Lyra in the titular canoe after a flood and their journey and quest for sanctuary for Lyra is truly harrowing for kids their age and in the world that is happening around them. Some more adult material is included here but it still feels on par with the old child/early teen group of readers. I hope Lyra gets to hear this story in the next books, it is quite the tale and technically her first adventure. Suffice to say if you enjoyed His Dark Materials, you'll enjoy this too.
