Written and directed by Giuseppe De Santis in 1949, this Italian drama depicts a crime-and-love story in the Italian neorealism style. Silvana Mangano represents an American cultural influence such as chewing gum and boogie-woogie dancing. Overly-sexualized role of Mangano and the melodramatic presence of death and suicide in the film cause it to diverge from typical Italian neorealism. Although planting in the rice-paddy seems quite interesting, the story appears not-so-well cultivated.
