I picked this up because I really, really love "The Winter People" and this seemed to be going along the same lines. More time jumps this time but family secrets and weird happenings and bizarre crimes. In this story though the slow burn worked right up until a point where it feels like the author ran out of time. There was a lot of quick work to establish links between different parts of the story and then everything just rolls down a hill to its conclusion, which is something I had suspected. The earlier part is really good. In one time line we have sisters Rose and Sylvie, the latter obsessed with writing Alfred Hitchcock letters and going to be a movie star. Sylvie vanishes and Rose's daughter, Amy, and her friends spent a summer in the 80s trying to uncover the story behind Sylvie's disappearance. There is far more there than they bargained for and that follows into present day. If it sounds like there's a lot going on there sort of is. Aside from the time jumps there are multiple point of view shifts as well. It started strong, I just wish it had stuck the landing
