Coming from a debut writer, this novel is extraordinarily impressive. Callahan has created a world where the path not taken is always at the forefront of everyone’s mind. April and Oliver are step-cousins whose lives have been intertwined since birth. There has always been a bond between them too difficult to explain to others- and to themselves. Leading separate lives since Oliver went away to College, they are thrown back together for the agony of Buddy’s funeral, April’s younger brother who dies tragically in a car accident at the age of 18. The novel begins here and continues with April and Oliver struggling to reconcile the mistakes of the past and prevent wrong decisions that may lead them to a questionable future. Gripping, with edgy prose, the awkwardness between two people that have a lifetime of things left unsaid between them is showcased in this sometimes dark/sometimes light tale of fate. Four and a half stars (out of five)
