You know the old movie trope about the detective, boxer, or shamus who wants nothing more than to retire to a chicken farm? Well, one of the characters of L. A. Confidential does just that, and I'm not convinced it isn't a bitter joke. The character should have been killed, and the scene in which it is explained he has survived and is chicken farm bound has the mark of a last-minute addition. The film has other flaws, for example, it is overlong, compared to its sleek, 1940s peers. However, it has a dark, hypnotic atmosphere, unlike any film made in the last 70 years, except for Chinatown. If you're looking for an entree into the world of hard core noir, this is a place to start.
