I agree with many of the commenters here: it is a chaotic mix of fiction and reality; reminiscent of old time movies, where a fictional protagonist meets up with all kinds of famous historical people. It gives the impression of being cut down from a longer movie, hence some of the unfortunate editing choices. And Natalie Portman is Natalie Portman. What are you going to do? And yet, there is also a lot to like. The writing and acting (most of it) is deeply felt, particularly on Stellan Skarsgard's part. There are truly gorgeous sets, scenery, costumes and cinematography. I saw this film years ago, and it has stuck with me ever since.
