Froster

This is definitely Sturges on the way DOWN. The humor is labored, the slapstick over-long, the dialogue tiresome, and unlike his other masterpieces, there seems to be no affection for his benighted characters. There is also a serious misjudgment in one of the homicidal sequences...a murder scene that is far too graphic to allow us to identify or sympathise with the protagonist again. Sturges' great work has a brilliant, fizzy balance of eccentricity, exceptional wit, quirky characters, slapstick and acute social observation. Here all these things fail him. This is a soggy, shrill mess.
