This 1981 detective film, based on John Gregory Dunne's 1977 True Confession novel, was about the profound changes to the lives of two brothers due to the investigation of a gruesome murder similar in nature to the infamous death of Elizabeth Short whose corpse was found dissected at the waist, on January 15, 1947 in LA. --- The 2006 movie Black Dahlia, based on James Ellroy 1987 novel was about how the same murder had turned the lives of two LA cops upside down. Both versions were deceptively fast moving and with more characters than usual. Close attention required in my case.

A bit of a forgotten film- this movie stars Robert Deniro and Robert Duvall ( as brothers ) in a tense, complex film about corruption in LA in the 1940's. The film makes a good companion piece to " Chinatown " in many ways.

Tom (on phone): And get me a list of sex crimes with the same M.O.
Cop on the phone: That's gonna take awhile, sergeant.
Tom: She was cut in two. Do you think it's an epidemic, like the flu?

Seamus: Do you remember why you became a priest?
Des: I had a vocation.
Seamus: That's what we all say, isn't it? A vocation to Iove God, help the poor, solace the sick and dying. Is that it?

Many more from IMDb:

Detective Tom: [Talking about the priest's heart attack death in the brothel] How long was he here?
Prostitute Lorna: It was the second one that did it.
Brenda: [Referring to the dead priest in her brothel] Heart attack while he was committing a mortal sin!

Dan: [to Des] Looks like a leprauchan - thinks like an Arab.

Tom: No, you know, you always were a harp with class.
