In a village near the coastal city of Putian, in southern China, in the early twentieth century, Yong Sheng is the son of a carpenter who makes famous doves whistles. Locals love these whistles, which, hanging from the birds' feathers, make wonderful symphonies. Placed in an American pastor's boarding house, the young Yong Sheng will follow the teachings of his daughter Mary, teacher at the Christian school. It is she who gives birth to the vocation of the boy: Yong Sheng, while making whistles like his father, decides to become the first Chinese pastor of the city. Married forcibly to obey old superstitions, Yong Sheng will study theology in Nanjing and, after many adventures, the young pastor will return to Putian for a brief period of happiness. But everything changes in 1949 with the advent of the People's Republic, beginning for him as for so many other Chinese an era of torment-- which culminates during the Cultural Revolution. The author traces the surprising story of his own grandfather, one of the first Christian pastors in China.
