The son of a housemaid, Dr. Faraday has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. During the long hot summer of 1948, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked. But it is now in decline and its inhabitants, a mother, son, and daughter, are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. When he takes on his new patient, Faraday has no idea how closely the family's story is about to become entwined with his own.

My comment will echo many of the others: the acting was great, the scenery, mood and atmosphere of the film were also spot on. However, the story is way too vague. I haven't read the book so I don't know if it is better and the movie just failed to capture something that the book was able to do. But the story is just too open ended. It is rather frustrating. Is there really a ghost? Is Dr. Faraday responsible for a murder? What the heck is actually happening!!? I read an interview with the director and he sounds like he doesn't know either. Too bad. I don't mind subtlety and some ambiguity in a story as long as it is for good effect. But in this movie, it just fell flat. Again, with the acting and ambiance, the movie could have been really great had that story given us a bit more concrete information and sense of what was going on.

It's a big, beautiful nothing-burger. The director was going for subtlety, and he over-achieved. There is nothing there. There is no real story.

Disappointing production that lacks subtlety and tension of book.

The film missed the subtleties of the book. Disappointing.

Based on Sarah Waters’ novel, director Lenny Abrahamson has turned out an intriguing bag of sad romance, dour satire, and gothic horror tinged with madness which turns the old Haunted House trope on its ear. Everyone is suitably reserved and dapper like an episode of "Upstair/Downstairs" with ghosts, and the interior shots certainly set the mood with their decaying rococo and faded murals glimpsed through clouds of dust motes. But with the good stuff reserved for the final third of the film, he spends so much time providing backstory and cloaking everything in a shroud of depressed fatalism that he forgets to provide something solid for his audience to chew on while they wait. Lastly, that final reveal though hardly shocking considering the plethora of none-too-subtle clues dropped along the way, does provide a twist spooky enough to make Edgar Allan Poe crack a smile.

I think the movie is more about what's happening here, than ghosts. The house seems to reject Dr. Faraday, by eliminating the family, so he has no reason to be there. You can see his desire to become head of the household by marrying into the family.

Beautiful scenery and great acting. As mentioned by others, very slow-moving and strange. I would add pointless, other than a few peripheral insights into the difficulties of resuming life after World War I and the crippling death taxes on large estates.

A strange little movie which you think is a ghost story but the story has no ghosts. Dr Faraday returns to his small town where he grew up to continue his obsession with a certain upper class manor house and it's female occupants. Well acted by all concerned but quite slow moving, dreary and a bit disappointing that the supernatural elements are not really supernatural but according to the director a violent spectral force of oppressive patriarchy emanating from the male characters. More like a creepy bad boyfriend movie than a ghost story.
