On a winter's evening in Notting Hill, Dawn Arrowood drives home after a doctor's appointment confirming her pregnancy. She is terrified. Her older husband has made it clear that he wants no children. And Dawn is not even sure that the child is his. But as Dawn arrives home, she is attacked from behind as she gets out of her car. In the ensuing struggle, her assailant whispers in the ear "I'm sorry" - and cuts her throat. Gemma Jones and Duncan Kincaid are called to the crime scene. The gripping case that develops forces them to investigate 1960's Notting Hill and it's racial tensions, the Russian mafia and a possible serial killer.

Good book. Enjoyed reading. Did not care for the ending. One Good Reads reader had to ask who was the killer. Crombie tends to pick the unlikeliest character as the killer. I also found out that I was not the only reader who did not know who Alex's mother was and how was she involved with Karl. Good Reads answered the first question (Julie was Alex's mother) but not the second.

Excellent read - enough substance to make a really interesting storyline.
Great character development - enough suspense to keep going to the end.
Will definitely read more from this author.

More life changes for Gemma and Duncan in this installment in the series. Also, I enjoyed the actual mystery and the characters involved in it. I figured out the killer by using a formula: it's never a main character, but a peripheral one. Enjoyed it nevertheless. Lots of description of the location (Notting Hill) as always.
