Although I found parts of this novel fascinating, I also found the jumping around between stories and time periods disjointing in the audio version. The book centers around Anna Kerrigan -- at 12, near the end of the depression, when her father disappears, and again, at 19, when she breaks all the stereotypes by doing underwater ship repairs for the U.S. Navy during World War II. Along the way, the reader glimpses old New York society, gangster life, a rousing lost at sea story, and a full circle when the man responsible for the disappearance of Anna's father becomes the father of Anna's baby. Covering nearly the first half of the 20th century, the reader is introduced to various subsets of American life that occur in or near the waters of New York City.
