Things Are Good Now is a unique book that is filled with short stories detailing the struggles and challenges that newcomers to Canada have to deal with. Each story tells the story of an immigrant moving into Canada and how they must evolve and shape themselves into individuals deemed acceptable in the eyes of Western civilization. Every main character has a personality different from every short story that is included in this novel. Things Are Good Now brings the modern day difficulty of immigrants moving to Western society, into light. Every emotion and challenge the character encounters, you feel as your own. The author, Djamila Ibrahim, puts forth her best writing skills into this novel, giving the reader a different perspective on the hardships of moving into an unfamiliar country. This novel is remarkable and gave me a new insight on how hard it really is for immigrants to settle into Canada, so I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about another one’s culture.
