The Active Fiction Project is a mashup of literary fiction, walking tours and public space. It's a recurring public art initiative that occurs annually in Vancouver, BC, starting each summer and stretching into the fall, and sometimes even into winter. For each story, the chapters are physically installed in public spaces throughout the same neighbourhood in which the story is takes place. At the end of each chapter, readers are given a choice about which way the narrative should proceed, and, based on their choice, are provided with a different location to find the next chapter. Active Fiction allows readers to experience a story that they discover by walking, or biking, through the same neighbourhood in which the story unfolds. In this way, the reader plays an active role in both shaping the narrative, as well as in actively moving through the physical space of the story.
