An interesting, gritty mashup on the events of the Old Testament, taking place just before the story of the flood and Noah. Caine is cursed to walk the earth unable to die. He bears witness to humanity haven fallen to barbarism of every sort. Centuries after giving up on humanity, he meets a woman who searching for her child that almost reminds him of his mother. He cautiously volunteers to help her find him, hoping to find a redeeming inner peace. This puts him in the path of Noah, who uses extreme violence and slavery in the name of religious worship, and is busy organizing the construction of his ark. There were a lot of interesting idea's in this book. Some examples are Caine questioning the morality of a divine will allowing its creations to suffer, or questioning Noah's use of slaves to construct his ark and his brutality towards other humans as ethical even though it's implied that it's being done by divine will. Jason Aaron manages to take a very old and common story and make something new of it. The artwork was also really well done. The whole thing is reminiscent of the illustrated stories in the classic Heavy Metal magazine issues. I can't wait to read more.

The writing and art is dark and wonderful. Certainly not for the evangelical crowd but if you decide to venture into the world created by Aaron and Guéra you will be rewarded with a dangerous slop sure to have you satisfied for picking the book up.
