Did not like the lead actress or the concept of the movie.

In Hindi, Zindagi is life, so the film's title alludes to a kind of 'love letter to life'. It's about finding the source of joy in one's life, amid the clutter and distractions, and pursuing it. I wouldn't call this a romance, although there are romantic elements. It's more about relationships of all kinds--family, friends, professional--and mostly about a person's relationship with their own life. In that sense, it is a love story--about falling in love with life itself. I found this a really wonderful, original film. Alia Bhat and Shah Rukh Khan are superb, along with the fairly large supporting cast. They're all interesting characters, there's a great soundtrack, and the writing is outstanding, with the story never going exactly where you expect. 2-1/2 hours might sound like an epic, but the story covers just the right amount of ground to tell a good story well, and doesn't dip into Harlequin fairyland. It's subtitled, of course, with characters speaking a strange blend of Hindi and English (Hindlish?) throughout, which is entertaining in itself. Really well done. A thoughtful film that should ultimately leave most people moving their feet and feeling uplifted.

As always, I loved Shahrukh's portrayal of his character. The look of the film was nice and the production seemed to be on point. But I personally just did not like the main character. I don't even know if this was entirely due to acting. It was a combination of the characters' personality (which was quite distasteful in my opinion) and the writing of her storyline. I think with a few tweaks, it could have come across a little better, but I was offended by her selfish decision-making and the way that she was very convinced of her attractiveness but was routinely rude and inconsiderate to others around her. Overall, it's the kind of movie that folks might find enjoyable. I can't say it was bad, but I personally didn't like some of the films' elements.

With two of India's biggest stars I was a little skeptical that DZ would be anything more than cornball, over sentimentalized drama. I was wrong. Both lead actors were very good--Bhatt is maturing well and convincingly portrayed her adrift, coming-of-age character. She was a positive female role model for her age group: professionally established and respected and figuring out her emotions along the way. SRK fulfilled his role with ease without any tear-jerking corny emotions--well done, convincing. This would be a niche success at the box office to be sure. It's aimed at educated middle/upper class audiences who have some idea of the value of psychotherapy, which in India is far less than commonly accepted. Scenery in Mumbai and Goa was fun, again reinforcing my suggestion about the intended audience--poor people and dirt were absent. Finally, this is the director's second film--Gauri Shinde is her name. Her "English Vinglish" was a pleasant romp with a bit older female lead that's also worth a view. Music was OK/good.

This title may be suitable for mature teens but probably not be suitable for younger children due to references to promiscuity, alcohol consumption and some profanity.

Bad acting coupled with poor story line makes Dear Zindagi a movie not worth watching. Alia Bhatt makes a vain attempt at acting and Shah Rukh Khan is a complete misfit for his role.
