Ten-year-old Susan Sinclair is a typical girl whose most exotic pastime, in the normal course of things, is her weekly martial arts class. But when a complete stranger gives her a rare crystal while she's at a flea market with her parents, everything changes. When Susan sleeps, she wakes up on a nineteenth-century migrant ship headed for New York City. There, she meets a young boy named Jeremy who was orphaned at the beginning of the vessel's journey. When Susan attempts to return the crystal, she learns it has chosen her to go to places in the past where something is wrong and must be set right, and she can't give the stone away until it determines the time is right. Susan, who does not even like Jeremy, is outraged. However, as her travels through time continue, she softens toward the unfortunate boy and decides to give this new adventure a chance. But on one return visit to the ship, a bully steals the crystal--and Susan finds herself stuck in the past. She will have to summon all the bravery and resourcefulness she can to escape from a danger beyond her wildest dreams.

A Rare Gift is the first book in a series that I am writing. The series title is Crystal Journals.

Susan Sinclair has become a person that I know very well. I find myself cheering her on
as she surmounts the obstacles that I gleefully put in her path. Thinking about what troubles
she will fall into next is a lot of fun for me.

There are two levels of plotting, I find. Level one is what happens in each book and the
twists and turns that the story takes so that Susan remains challenged, and the story is
of adventure. Level two is the next book down the line and the one after that, and which characters I can bring back at a later time and what that would mean to Susan and the overall story.

Writing a book and lots of stories never prepared me for the wonderful feeling of actually holding my book in my hands. It was great. Then the next great thing was hearing from people who had read it. It was wonderful to hear what they thought. Some asked questions that I had not even thought about.

So, Susan's adventures continue in Book 2 which is called Pharaoh's Tomb. Book 3 is Lady Knight. I can tell you that the story occurs in the year 1212. Book 4 is going to be a real surprise, I think, for Susan and for readers. Stay tuned.

“I see this series, as a way to introduce children to other cultures and experiences. I've built a website which has teacher suggestions for further study stemming from each book. The web site also emphasizes the Life Lessons that Susan learns through her experiences." G. Rosemary
