From Library Staff

The fate of the individual is all but forgotten when history records the world’s conflicts. In her collection of stories, Champagne powerfully recreates the personal narratives of people caught in the Nanjing Massacre, The Ukrainian Famine, the Holocaust and other atrocities.

This book is beautifully written. The subject matter is so difficult yet Lyse Champagne creates memorable characters and her prose is poetic. Why have I never heard of her before?

The characters and stories in this collection are vividly rendered in a spare, beautifully crafted prose. The emotional turmoil of Champagne's characters lurks beneath its surface of the writing; she refrains from hitting you over the head with it.

The reader immediately feels connected to the characters, and their dilemmas, heartbreaks and joys. At the end of each story, we don't want to let them go, suspecting what is coming just around the corner.

Well worth reading, but be prepared for the emotional impact of these stories.
