The city of Voortyashtan was once the home of the goddess of death, war and destruction, but now it's little more than a ruin. General Turyin Mulaghesh is called out of retirement and sent to this hellish place to find a Saypuri secret agent who's gone AWOL in the middle of a mission. But the ghosts of past wars have followed her there, and soon she begins to wonder what happened to the souls in the afterlife when the gods were defeated by her people, the Polis. Do the dead sleep soundly in the land of death? Or do they have plans of their own?

A dense, complex and thoroughly satisfying exploration of the impact of duty, war, oppression, political movements, governmental intrigue and economics upon individuals and populations. Not recommended for someone who wants a simple story with a single thread.

Retired General Turyin Mulaghesh would like to stay retired, thank you very much. As the leader of the army that sacked the Continental city of Bulikov and destroyed its gods, she believes that she's done more than enough for the Saypur empire.
Unfortunately, the Saypuri prime minister has other plans for Mulaghesh and is suspending her military pension until she agrees to undertake a covert operation on the Continent. This follow-up to City of Stairs introduces a one-armed, foul-mouthed, and not always sober protagonist who's determined to successfully carry out the mission she never wanted any part of.
