Byron charts the rise and fall of an irresistible and devastatingly handsome genius who had it all and threw it all away. It begins as Byron's struggle for acceptance as a poet is reversed by the publication of Childe Harolde's Pilgrimage, which turns him into an overnight success and the toast of London society--the 19th century equivalent of a bad-boy rock star. While disdaining social conventions, he needs money, so marries wealthy pious Annabella Milbanke after becoming in-famous for his affairs with serving girls, society beauties, and his half-sister, leaving the landscape littered with illegitimate children. As his reputation spreads, it is permanently tarnished, so Byron abandons England for self-imposed exile in Venice, and dies after taking up the Greek struggle for independence from the Turks.

Utterly awful. Incoherent and rambling, hysterical acting, and poor direction. Only bright spot is Vanessa Redgrave.

Since there wasn't a rating, and partially my fault for not reading up on his biography prior to watching, I was rather shocked at the very visual content which is completely inappropriate to watch with young children. I wish there was a rating, however, since there isn't and because I take responsibility for my laziness, I thought I'd add a comment here to advice others instead. As I understand his life story post watching some of it, I think it follows pretty closely to the biography available. If you're expecting an inside view into his creative process, you'll be disappointed, but you'll get a glimpse of his troubled and complicated life and personality.

This series started off well in the beginning, but by the second half it fell apart by degrees. It never followed any cohesive storyline: instead it wandered back & forth between several relationships, none of which ever really develop into anything meaningful. One moment the focus is on some intrigue in London, the next we're with Shelley & his wife in Venice: all fleeting escapades with dozens of whores poking out of every crevice in nearly every scene. As for thin-lipped Johnny Lee Miller, I found him unconvincing as Byron-he lacked vigour & charisma. Saddest of all, there is very little attention paid to his actual works - a few lines of poetry here & there, but not enough emphasis on this or the man himself to give me any sense of greatness.
