In their book researchers Zimbardo and Coulombe dive down the rabbit hole of social, economic and technological shifts that are influencing, shaping and changing people’s lives. Their research focus is young men who find themselves adrift in the middle of these social changes and societal shifts; a little bit lost about what their roles in society should be.
Man interrupted seeks not to answer the simplistic question about what is wrong with young men today – a question plenty of people may have asked – rather they take a broader look at complex human behavior: seeking to identify the individual, situational and systemic factors that may act as barriers and limiters to young men achieving their full potential. The authors suggest that checking out of education and work, excessive maleness, gaming and porn use are all symptoms of other things including absent fathers, school systems that fail to meet the learning needs of boys, and the enchantment of technology and arousal addiction. With respect for the advances achieved and the work remaining to be done the authors recognize that women have benefitted from a concerted effort at redefining women’s roles and power in modern society. Men, on the other hand, have not had a similar movement and this has resulted in uncertainty and dis-ease about what it means to be man and male today.
