This collection draws on several articles Lawrence Wright wrote following where and how Al Qaeda and its core cult-like beliefs have morphed and spread. They include: a picture of Saudi Arabia under the control of the religious police; the Syrian film industry, then compliant at the edges but already exuding a feeling of the barely masked fury that erupted into civil war; Israel and Hamas waging war over Gaza. Others continue to look into Al-Qaeda as it forms a master plan for its future, experiences a rebellion from within the organization, and spins off a growing web of terror in the world. The American response is covered in profiles of two FBI agents and a head of the CIA. It ends with the recent devastating capture and beheadings by ISIS of four American journalists and how our government handled the situation.

I was hoping that this book would enlighten and inform me about ISIS the way that The Looming Tower did for me about Al Qaeda. It still provided level-headed perspective and some insight into ISIS, however it isn't one coherent piece. There were some sections that I thought weren't even necessary to have at all in the book. That's why I'm giving this 4 stars.

This book is a collection of articles relating to terrorists, terrorist victims, and terrorism investigators during the period of Al Qaeda and The Islamic State. It is not a book about Al Qaeda nor is it a book about The Islamic State. If you are interested in Al Qaeda, read “The Looming Tower,” the Pulitzer Prize winning book about the Al Qaeda 9/11 plot. Other great books are “The Dark Side,” “Black Banners,” “500 Days,” “The Eleventh Day” and “The United States of Jihad.” “The Terror Years” is somewhat of a book for terrorism completists.
