: After a wonderful two-month visit with her grandparents in England, 12-year-old Dorothy was returning home to Halifax when the great ship she was on hit an iceberg and sank. Her escort, Miss Pugh, died in the tragedy. Dorothy survived. Now home, and banned from school for hitting a girl who was taunting her about the sinking, Dorothy is trying to come to terms with her guilt. Her favourite teacher brings her a journal and suggests she write about her experience, but instead she writes of her bohemian grandparents, her English friends Owen and Millie and the plays they put on. But the nightmares persist, and finally, with some deft questioning by the teacher, Dorothy is finally able to recall the events of that fateful night – and the secret she’s been hiding. Ellis concludes the novel with photos of the Titanic and its survivors and fascinating historical and author’s notes.
