There are two sounds of the West, scores by Ennio Morricone and then scores by everyone else. His music is not going to be the grand adventure you'd hear in a John Wayne film. His scores can be haunting and thoroughly emotional. Listening to his score over the carriage in the snow scenes while watching this film in 70mm was better than the actual film itself.

Quentin Tarantino enlisted the legendary composer Ennio Morricone to create an original score for The Hateful Eight. All I can say is that it is totally epic. Made of mostly unused tracks from John Carpenter’s The Thing mixed with some newly composed themes, songs by The White Stripes, David Hess, and Roy Orbison, and dialogue from the film, The Hateful Eight score is a sonically diverse listening experience. Many of the themes remain stuck in your head long after finishing the final track, and even after seeing the film, this score has left a lasting impression without the need for a visual context. Ennio does such a phenomenal job of creating atmosphere and establishing tone with a simple melody, and it is difficult to find a movie score that can do this effectively while still having its own unique presence so it doesn’t sound like the latest generic, big budget, motion picture soundtrack. It is the best film score I listened to in 2015, so be sure to check it out if that is your jam. My favorite tracks would have to be the harrowing “La Lettera di Lincoln” and “Jim Jones at Botany Bay” sung by the talented Jennifer Jason Leigh.
