A lovely series for primary students who are curious about Canada and its past. It also provides a nice introduction to the genre of historical fiction for young readers. The series premise is that two friends ride a magic sled to various places and events in Canada's past to help solve mysteries and/or people in distress. There are further interesting facts about the event at the end of the story. The chapters are short and the book is a quick read, so ideal for a class read aloud. Check it out!
In this adventure series, Canadian Flyer, Emily and Matt travel through time to the Halifax Explosion and Citadel Hill. They meet a young soldier who is looking for his young sister and her dog. Very easy to read. There are quick facts at the end of the book that a young student writing a report could use.
Based on the real events of Dec. 6, 1917, the book depicts fictitious characters experiencing the aspects endured by people during and after the greatest man-caused explosion prior to the atomic bomb.
