Opinion

From Library Staff

When Jacob wears dresses at school some of the kids make fun of him. But when he wears the dress he makes with his Mom, he feels so good in it he doesn’t care what anyone else thinks.

This book is about the identity of a boy and how he chooses to express himself through his love of dresses. It shows the uncertainty of his parents and their attempts to be supportive, despite few role models. The book is warm, wonderfully illustrated, and hits on points that society does have reservations, but is progressing forward. My only concern was that the book didn't have a solid, conclusive ending.

A wonderful book to introduce a unit on respecting differences and challenging traditional gender roles! 'Jacob's New Dress' tackles this topic in a thoughtful and realistic way. I really liked the way Jacob is portrayed as accepting of himself, and the way he's shown to peacefully confront his critic without excluding him or retaliating in any way.

Fantastic book for a sensitive topic.

Definitly a book-with-a-message. Books-with-a-message are usually less effective (and more heavy handed) at conveying said message than books that are just really good stories. This was still a lovely and timely and well handled story. I also appreciated the bit at the end about the authors' real-life gender non-conformist son.
