Cartwheel has arrived in a new country, and feels the loss of all she's ever known. She creates a safe place for herself under an "old blanket" made out of memories and thoughts of home. But when she meets a new friend, the relationship helps her take her first steps into a new culture, and Cartwheel begins to weave a "new blanket," one of friendship and a renewed sense of belonging.

From Library Staff

A young girl nicknamed Cartwheel and her aunt leave Sudan to escape the war. Cartwheel finds everything about her new home strange and she feels like she is not herself anymore either. Then, a kind gesture from another child helps her begin to feel like herself again in her new life.

A book that tenderly shares the refugee experience of a young child. "Then the war came" and Cartwheel (a name her Aunt gave her) is suddenly lost amidst the noise and foreignness of a new country. Until she is befriended by another young girl while visiting the playground.

This book is delicate and beautiful - an exploration of learning a new language and culture while valuing and keeping the original one.
