1977. Young Mira is a student in the highly competitive world of New York City ballet. The rigorous hours of practice and obsessive perfectionism offer her control, power, and the promise of glory. It also introduces her to Maurice DuPont, a reclusive balletomane who becomes her mentor-- touching dark places within herself and sparking unexpected desires that will upend both their lives. In the present day, Kate, a professor of dance at a Midwestern college, embarks on a risky affair with a student that threatens to obliterate her career and capsizes the life she has created for her reinvented self. A letter from a man she's long thought dead hurls Kate into a past she thought she had left behind.

Opinion

From Library Staff

This psychological study set in 1977 contrasts the stories of two women. Mira is an aspiring dancer with the New York City Ballet who falls under the spell of a mentor. Kate is a dancing instructor attracted to one of her students and troubled by her past.

A sad tale about a girl who gets lost along the way in pursuit of a dance career, and seeks redemption and peace as an adult.

As a former dancer, I enjoyed this book but found some of primary characters and situations contrived. I think it was adept at creating a sense of atmosphere but often worked too hard to wring drama (veering into melodrama) out of the scenes. I did enjoy it however and think other dance fans will as well.
