Drawing on Irish folktales/mythology, this is one of the most beautiful animated films I've ever seen. It also uses traditional animation, which is refreshing in this digital age. It has something in common with Studio Ghibli films in that it's slower paced, doesn't really have good guys and bad guys, and avoids Disney cliches like dumb songs and excessive cross-marketing. Forms a trilogy with "The Secret of Kells" and "Wolfwalkers." Selkies can also be found in "The Secret of Roan Inish" and "Ondine."

My four year old loves this movie, and I love it because it's a story without the typical villain or violence (or violence disguised as humor, like in a lot of Disney movies). The one character that is the "villain" changes later in the story and one can understand where she was coming from (similar to the witch in Howls Moving Castle changing later and being forgiven and accepted).

I appreciate it when there either isn't an purely evil character in a children's movie, or when the "villian" changes later and is understood or forgiven - teaching forgiveness and that personalities aren't solely evil or good.

Studio Ghibli movies like Ponyo are like this (villian character not being evil and at least being understood somewhat). And Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro are very sweet stories without violence or villains at all.

Touching fantasy story has great characters throughout and a beautiful climax. Only challenged in this way by Patrick McHale's Cartoon Network miniseries, "Over the Garden Wall" (2014).

A truly exceptional work of art in an age of Pixar/dreamworks wannabes.

This movie is absolutely beautiful with moving scenery, picture, and a hauntingly beautiful score. It is a touching story of loss and how the love found between family helps to heal if you open yourself to it. The Irish mythology is wonderfully wound throughout.
I borrowed this movie because I was getting ready to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and it was the perfect addition to the other activities I was doing.

From the DVD's description-
From the creators of the Academy Award-nominated "The Secret of Kells" comes a breathtakingly gorgeous, hand-drawn masterpiece. Based on the Irish legend of the Selkies, "Song of the Sea" tells the story of the last seal-child, Saoirse, and her brother Ben, who go on an epic journey to save the world of magic and discover secrets of their past. Pursued by the owl witch, Macha, and a host of ancient and mythical creatures, Saoirse and Ben race against time to awaken Saoirse's powers and keep the spirit world from disappearing forever. As enthralling for adults as for children young and old, "Song of the Sea" is a wonder of magical storytelling and visual splendor that is destined to become a classic.

I loved every minute of this brilliant film! The animation, music, story, and characters are absolutely stunning! It's refreshing to see such masterpieces being produced, something that both adults and children can enjoy. I also love all the Celtic mysticism, and the usage of Irish Gaelic. Beautiful.

Beautiful animation with a featured song that stuck in my head for days....sung beautifully by the voice of Saoirse. Loved the imaginative way Saoirse was transformed from selkie and back to human....magical. Voice of Ben was just right. Lovely fairy tale for both adults and kids.
