Robert Altman is one of my favorite directors of all time, and there's still plenty from him I have yet to watch. Thieves Like Us was one such film I was highly anticipating having heard many references to it in interviews/commentaries Altman did on film like M*A*S*H, McCabe & Ms. Miller, The Player, and Short Cuts.

It was, honestly different...a period piece set in the late 1930s dealing with 3 escaped convicts; the old decrepit one still keeping track of how many banks he's robbed (Bert Remsen), the middle-aged boozing gung-ho trigger happy one (John Schuck), and the young eager trying to find a place in life for himself one (Keith Carradine).

Add to the mix the young girl (Shelley Duval) who attempts to steer Carradine's character towards a better life and you have the basic plot of the film.

I will admit, it was a bit long even for an Altman film, but by the end of the film, it feels like you've watched a good follow-up to McCabe & Ms. Miller.

This is is awful ! ...when I got this NYPL disc home and put this movie in the DVD player...and the screen says: "NOT FORMATTED FOR THIS REGION" !!?? ( Even though it states "Region #1", on the DVD jacket !!?)
I have watched a thousand other New York Public Library DVDs on my Panasonic Region 1 DVD Player,.. but this one makes it over 32 TIMES that a film has come up as "NOT FORMATTED..." etc. !
I waited a long time to get this highly recommended film.
I really wanted to see this movie.
And I know that ALL the NYPL copies of this title will have this same problem !!
WHY is the New York Public Library buying DVD's that are "NOT FORMATTED.." to be viewed in this region ?
Has this ever happened to anyone else out there ??
