The only "problem" I had with this novel was reaching the end… only to discover that it is the first of a trilogy and I still had two more parts of the Kyla Davis / Lucy Connor saga left to enjoy. British author Teri Terry is one I'd never heard of, and I agree that she deserves to be much better known. I found this book as a result of browsing reader comments on other books I've read, both online and hard copy courtesy of the Vancouver Public Library website ( I make it a point to rate every book and share a comment on books I've enjoyed and deemed above average. There's enough criticism out there so I tend not to bad-mouth books I find ho-hum or below average and simply assign a low rating without judgment. Now I'm more dedicated than ever to the rating and commenting process because by immersing myself in it, I found what I'm sure is bound to become one of the most enduring trilogies of all time.

Excellent book.

I've been reading a lot of dystopian fiction lately and this book was so refreshing.

The world it's set in is eerily plausible. It wouldn't require world wars or worldwide natural disasters to get to, and it doesn't read like a completely alternate universe (which, as much as I like Hunger Games, that book does).

The main character is well developed and easy to relate to - something I was worried about having just finished the Maze Runner books (which are action-packed and plot-rich but have barely developed characters and a few gaping plot holes).

This is not a book of blood and gore (though I suspect the sequels may head in that direction a bit more). This is a psychological thriller. People go missing and we have to imagine what happens to them. And, honestly, imagined dangers can be scarier than the ones that are spelled out. Kyla lives in a world of imminent danger and suspicion rather than running from monsters.

Good book. I recommend it for those who like dystopian books.

This kind of reminded me of another book because the story line was the storyline was the same. It was kind of like someone copied the story and the idea. But overall it was a great book and it was a page-turner as well. The synopsis was really great and that really made me look forward to it. It wasn't really exciting through the whole story and I don't recommend it to people who like action packed books. I also think that it could have been more well described. So not that great but pretty good.

Such a great read, I usually choose a book to read based on the cover and the synopsis. I am glad that I picked up the first and second part of the book Trilogy. I am glad to be reading books again. My long Lost Love

This was a re-read for me and it was just as good as the first and second time. It has been three years since the last time I read this book, so I had forgotten a lot of things, but as I read, everything started coming back to me.
This book follows Kyla, whose memory has been wiped. This made a very interesting perspective because she doesn't know how to do so many things. She gets frustrated because she doesn't know how to open a car door. She cuts her hand while washing dishes because she doesn't know that knifes are sharp. Kyla's personality is also very interesting. Slating is supposed to take away your personality, but Kyla is different.
She knows that she is different than other slated's and it is something that she struggles with for the whole book. When she dreams at night, she remembers things from her past, which is supposed to be impossible since she had been slated. She wants to do something about it, but she also knows that being different is dangerous and could cost her.
This book also has a lot of great characters. Amy, Kyla's sister who has also been slated, is very bubbly and at times, this was a little bit annoying, but that is what is expected of Slateds. I love Kyla's adopted parents too. You can obviously tell that something is going on with her Dad. I also remember some things from the next books, but this is one of the things that is going to take me by surprise. I also love Kyla's Mum, even though she is described as the Dragon, and at times she can be strict, she does really care about Kyla. She makes soup when Kyla is sick and I love that about her.
Also, some characters are not as enjoyable, or disappear early on, but every character is important. Everyone is either helping Kyla or working with the Lorders, and this makes things more intense. You can't forget the small people because they come back later. Everyone has such a big purpose.
The whole plot of this book was just super amazing. It is fast paced. It is also a YA dystopia, which I love so that added to things. In Kyla's society, people under 16 who have committed crimes are Slated. They get their memories erased instead of fining them or sending them to juvie or whatever. It is a cool system for teenagers to get a fresh start instead of punishment. The Levo's are also really awesome. All slated's have a Levo which is a small bracelet which keeps their emotions under control. It a Slated gets under 4.5 their Levo vibrates. A very low reading can knock a slated out or kill them. The government did this so that slated's can't return to their old ways. They can't feel anger. The Levo pretty much controls them until they are 21 when it is removed. I just thought it was a really cool element to the story.
One thing I love, that is not in a lot of fiction is animals. I love it when characters have pets. Sebastian is the most wonderful cat ever. To all the cat-haters, Sebastian will change your mind. He doesn't have super powers like some fantasy animals. He is just an every day house cat, but I love him. I don't even know why, but I want a cat like Sebastian so badly.

One of the best books I have read in a while. A great psychological thriller that keeps you thinking all the way through and long after you put it down. I think the best thing about Slated is that it is all too real in the way that it could one day happen in this world. The squeal, Fractured, is just as good, if not better in the way it twists the mind and the plot by including different subplots. Gripping, fast-paced and never a dull page. These books easily rival The Hunger Games. An unputdownable thriller!

honestly i finished it in 30 minutes. the story-line hooked me in and didn't let me go. READ IT, LOVE IT, FINISH IT, RATE IT, RECOMMEND IT.
