A monster, but an interesting one: half romantic melodrama, half noir realism; one foot in the 1930s, and the other in the 1950s. Arch of Triumph suffers from staying too true to the long, talky novel. The casting of Boyer -- the best known Frenchman after de Gaulle -- as an Austrian refugee in Paris is questionable. As much as I love Ingrid Bergman's performance, I wanted to see less of her endless story, and much more of Charles Laughton's. Worth seeing, but you're better off watching Notorious (1946) instead.

A timely and relevant story to our times - refugees and the dawn of dictatorships and war. The story and the cast was captivating - stateless and the fleeing of persecution are devastating. One can never know what statelessness is like unless one is that situation. This film gives a great portrayal of of this situation. This black and white 1948 film is a gem.

There was a shorter version made in 1984 with Donald Pleasance and Anthony Hopkins. Not much change but slightly better ( a poor version is available on Youtube).

The stars, the local color, and lush expressionist/noir camera work work for the first half of the film when the story is focussed more on the tensions of pre WW2 refugees in a very dark City of Light, but the second hour of the film turns the whole thing into an overlong and overdrawn, and very silly romantic melodrama. The film seemed interminable at over 2 hours, cutting a half hour or so might have made this a 3-3.5 star film. Still film buffs and cinephiles will probably want to watch this, but will likely end up thinking "what a shame".
