The world can be a perilous place. And the seemingly friendly world of Canada's favourite fictional family is no different. Everyone is afraid of something: Dave, for example, is afraid of dolls, germs, and Mary Turlington. Sam, on the other hand, is afraid of bees, UFOs, and "mewpilated" cows. Morley's fears--public nudity and drop-in visits--are slightly more pragmatic. It's hard to find courage in the face of sewer monsters, deformed fish heads, abandoned car wrecks, and stalled elevators in empty mansions, but in this brand new collection of Vinyl Cafe stories, Dave and the gang pluck up the courage to deal with all kinds of danger, both real and imagined. In Stuart McLean's hilarious new book of cautionary tales, rediscover the deep, delicious thrill of fear that looms so large in childhood and spills over into adult life with startling, often delightful, effect.

Always a good laugh, always a good tale, Dave's stories never disappoint. McLean is master storyteller, mixing grotesque situations with emotion, spinning tales that always make sense despite the crazy endings. In this series, he turns to Dave's past and despite some nostalgia, the stories never sink into pathos, making them faded postcards of the past.
Despite all this knee-slapping humour, McLean knows how to tug at heart strings, which is why we turn to them time and again. Dave's family isn't a caricature, but rather a little bit of all of us.

Dave's childhood stories in Cape Breton are most charming.
Stewart McLean is my favourite short story teller - not recognized enough in literary circles.
He is the one who can make you laugh out loud and next minute bring tears to your eyes with a beautiful conclusion.

Another fabulous collection of Vinyl Cafe stories. I can hear Stuart McLean's voice telling the stories as I read them. Very enjoyable!
