In 1880s Vigàta, a stranger comes to town to open a pharmacy. Fofò turns out to be the son of a man legendary for having a magic garden stocked with plants, fruits, and vegetables that could cure any ailment-a man who was found murdered years ago. Fofò escaped, but now has reappeared looking to make his fortune and soon finds himself mixed up in the dealings of a philandering local marchese set on producing an heir. An absurd, quirky murder mystery that recalls the most hilarious and farcical scenes of Shakespeare and The Canterbury Tales, Hunting Season will introduce American readers to a refreshing new aspect of one of our best-loved writers.

Take away everything you love about the Inspector Montalbano novels and add back the skill and craft of a master storyteller. The writing is the same but different...and that is a good thing. Some women may find parts of the story offensive but remember, these were the times they lived in and although Camilleri may have taken creative license with his story, it was necessary to flesh out (no pun intended) the character development and story line. Highly recommended, especially for Andrea Camilleri fans.

Not a police procedural, but a very satisfying story set in late 19th century Sicily, complete with priests, nobles, townspeople, and peasants, i.e. a cast of gossiping, salacious folk whose entertainment is interfering in the lives of their neighbors.
Slyly humorous and subtle from page one, I did a second take when I read the police officer assisting the lady off the boat, not holding her hand, but his hands on her backside. The plot wanders, and every time I thought I knew where it was going, I was delightfully surprised, right up to the end.
