You don't need to be a genius, you just need to be yourself. That's the message from Austin Kleon, a young writer and artist who knows that creativity is everywhere, creativity is for everyone. A manifesto for the digital age, Steal Like an Artist is a guide whose positive message, graphic look and illustrations, exercises, and examples will put readers directly in touch with their artistic side. When Mr. Kleon was asked to address college students in upstate New York, he shaped his speech around the ten things he wished someone had told him when he was starting out. The talk went viral, and its author dug deeper into his own ideas to create Steal Like an Artist, the book. The result is inspiring, hip, original, practical, and entertaining. And filled with new truths about creativity: Nothing is original, so embrace influence, col- lect ideas, and remix and re-imagine to discover your own path. Follow your interests wherever they take you. Stay smart, stay out of debt, and risk being boringthe creative you will need to make room to be wild and daring in your imagination.

I absolutely LOVED this little book! In fact, the only reason I gave it a lower rating was because the library version doesn't hold up well in the hands of so many patrons. It's definitely a book to buy, though. It's a fun little book filled with great advice and information. Whether you're a painter, a writer, or a graphic designer, there are tidbits in this book that you're sure to love. Don't let the "artist" part fool you, though. The information within can be applied to daily life for everyone. Buy it, read it, and give it to a friend!

At first glance this book looked like a quickly written messy hodgepodge of ideas. After reading 10 pages I realize it was a valuable well thought out tool to think outside the box. 4 stars out of 5 as this library app is not accurate in touch.

I was stuck and found this book to be the nudge I needed to get my creative juices flowing. Easy to read, humorous and very practical advice that anyone can follow.

A quick and pithy read about living a creative life and what to do when inspiration evades you. Encouraging, practical, funny and immediately useful for me. I enjoyed it and bought a copy. I have referred back to if often.

I can't believe it took me this long to read this book. It was a birthday gift from a friend years ago and it came at the perfect time right now. What a lovely, beautiful, inspiration of a book. I can't recommend it enough for a quick, dose of get off your butt and go make things. It's perfect for just that.

Super easy quick read. Though it had a LOT of thought provoking moments. I love it when a book puts complex ideas or philosophies into simple, understandable words. Showing how something so intense really isn't so hard to understand from the right perspective.
I really enjoy this guy's sense of humor as well as his take on artistic creativity. HIs basic principle is definitely easy to figure out from the start of the book.
Anyway, without giving too much away, I would definitely recommend this book to any artist from any area or stage of life who wants to be reminded of the stunning beauty of being creative!

If you are a creative of any sort and you struggle with your art or should I say the practice of your art then this book is for you. Simple and elegant...if this small book doesn't get you off your backside and motivate you to do your craft then nothing will. Highly recommended.

A quick read; partway through I realized there are a lot of my artist-friends I want to give it to!

This is poorly bound so be careful because the pages will fall right out.

It's probably too small to be truly helpful as it doesn't go into any depth at all in its recommendations, but its tips are still very useful for any artist (anyone in a creative field), especially students.

The question every young writer at some point asks is: “What should I write?” And the standard answer is, “Write what you know.” This advice always leads to terrible stories in which nothing interesting happens. . . . The best advice is not to write what you know, it’s to write what you like. Write the kind of story you like best – write the story you want to read.

One thing I’ve learned in my brief career: It’s the side projects that really take off. By side projects I mean the stuff that you thought was just messing around. Stuff that’s just play. That’s actually the good stuff. That’s when the magic happens.

It’s so important to have a hobby. A hobby is something creative that’s just for you. You don’t try to make money or get famous off it, you just do it because it makes you happy.
