The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

The Nobel-Prize winning author grew up in Columbia, and enjoyed to listen to his grandparent's stories for nightly entertainment. Apparently the re-telling of these stories resulted in a certain amount of exaggeration-for-effect over the years. The result -- a sort of "magical truth" writing style in the vein of Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" -- became the basis for the novel. Consider the following sentence from the first paragraph: "The world was so recent that many things lacked names, and in order to indicate them it was necessary to point." You know that can't be true. But the key to the enjoyment of the novel is that while the story-line is sometimes difficult to believe, it is still fun to imagine. I wouldn't give this book the superlatives you may be seeing since the recent death of the author, but if you enjoy the literary fictional soap opera genre, it's worth a listen. On the plus side, the translation preserves the interesting language and phrasing and makes it almost song-like, relaxing to hear. On the minus side, the character's Spanish names are unusual to the English speaking listener, and this makes keeping track of who is who difficult, and the story a little hard to follow. Overall, recommended.
