Based on interviews with more than 50 displaced Murle victims and witnesses, "They Are Killing Us" documents how the conflict and serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law have forced the majority of the Murle population to flee to remote areas of the bush, many of them cut off from access to emergency food and medical aid. This spate of crimes and abuses have played out in the context of inter-ethnic violence between the Lou Nuer, Dinka and Murle communities that has killed thousands of people in recent years. In early July, 2013, thousands of Lou Nuer fighters attacked Murle areas, killing an as-yet unknown number of Murle. Human Rights Watch calls on South Sudan to take urgent measures to address both patterns of violence: first to end violations committed by its own army and to hold those responsible for violations to account; and second urgently to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the crimes committed in the grave inter-ethnic violence. Serious allegations of government support to ethnic fighters have also been raised and require urgent and thorough investigation"--Page 4 of cover.
