One of the most expensive movies ever, and a huge flop...and it's actually a lot of fun.

I seriously do not understand all the negativities. I am not a critic or anything and when I choose to watch a movie, I am looking to be entertained. This movie does exactly that. If I want facts and law of gravity, I rather just watch documentary or national geographic channel. This movie is unique, action packed, and very fun to watch. I can't remember how many times I have seen it. And each time, I was drawn into it again. The story is rich and under-rated just like the movie Stardust. Go watch it and give it a try. What have you got to loose?

My only criticism are the impossible jumps. John Carter does not have super powers. He is an Earthman on a world with lower gravity than we have on Earth. I recall Burroughs mentioning him being able to leap 30 feet.
While thrilling to watch I had no device to suspend my disbelief for some of the really big ones. One scene has him with a man his own size on his back leap what appeared to be several hundred yards.
Let's do the math. On Earth an athletic man like John Carter might be able to make a fantastic leap or bound of maybe 10 feet. Mars has about one third the gravity of Earth so on Mars he might be able to leap maybe 30 feet and by the way at 1/3 gravity he would fall at only 1/3 the speed he would fall on Earth which would make him an easy target for their martian rifles while in the air.

This is a much better movie than you may have heard. It does not follow Burroughs' books very closely, but on its own terms, John Carter is a fun action story with some delightful sly humor, a terrific cast, and spectacular special effects, particularly in the case of the animated characters and their faces. I especially enjoyed the princess who is not a damsel in distress and can hold her own in a sword fight.

Don’t believe all the ‘informed’ comment that this movie is a flop. It ‘flopped’ because Disney spent way too much money making it, then promoted it poorly and hardly made a nickel on it. The movie is really pretty good and a big production but there are a few caveats. Taylor Kitsch is a fine actor despite what some of the other reviews on this page say. He does suffer from the Tom Cruise syndrome in that he’s quite a bit shorter than the guy he’s playing. Other than that he’s great. The screenwriters are more to blame for other criticisms. Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote a lot of books in this series and they tried to mesh a lot of it into the first movie and not always with great success. Like other movies based on several books this would have been better as an HBO or Netflix series where they could have taken more time with the material. Some of the changes they made to plot and characters are a problem so I get the unhappiness with that from people who love the books. So, this is a first time out effort by a big studio that didn’t quite get it right and as a result really stalled getting any more of this to the screen which is too bad. What is great is to see John Carter and Barsoom come to life on the screen at last. Hulk and Spider-Man are on their third time out at least, why not another crack at John Carter? The material is so much richer than either of those two and it’s time to stop letting this movie put a pall over making more of them. It’s still fun to watch though....and read the books!

It was entertaining but I don't know if I'll watch it again. Smells a little of Avatar.

This is a typical futuristic adventure and a popcorn movie. It's been done before many times.

This movie, from the director of Wall-E, wants to be Star Wars or Conan The Barbarian. It wants to be a rollicking epic space opera/sword and sandals tale on another world. The movie doesn't succeed, although it does manage to be an enjoyably average film.

The film's weaknesses are threefold. First, none of the protagonists are interesting or sympathetic except the Green Martian Chief played by Willem Dafoe- who is a supporting character who easily steals every scene he's in. The good guys are good because they're good, and the bad guys are bad because they're bad. The characterization is so broad and arch and uninteresting that they seem caricatures of caricatures. Second Taylor Kitsch can't act. Period. Sorry, harsh truth, moving on. Third, the movie feels incredibly rushed- trying to fit too much world building into what should be a tight action tale. It's a fun movie, but is littered with the bones of the much better movie it could have been.
