Follows the fates of five interrelated families-- American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh-- as they move through the dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women's suffrage. Thirteen-year-old Billy Williams enters a man's world in the Welsh mining pits. Gus Dewar finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson's White House. Brothers Grigori and Lev Peshkov embark on radically different paths when their plan to immigrate to America falls afoul. Billy's sister Ethel, a housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts, takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Fitzherbert falls in love with Walter von Ulrich, a spy at the German embassy in London.

This book felt like a porny Downton Abbey. Fascinating historical overview, but Follett's juxtaposition of a modern, explicitly narrated sexual ethos with historical events was rather jarring. Loved the narrator.

Loved this book! I am a big fan of Ken Follett and he has outdone himself. I love history and particularly the last century's conflicts but did not know a great deal of WW1. He made it so interesting and the narration is excellent. Can't be easy to do all the different accents. I cannot wait to listen to Book 2!

reader spoils a good tale by putting himself on autopilot: a 25 CD-long laundry list: no pauses, no expression.

John Lee's reading of this book is as outstanding as Follet's writing. Lee uses different accents so one really gets a feel for the book's content. A great read.

An epic tale about the events leading to and throughout WWI with special attention to the Russian revolution and women’s suffrage. A great history lesson but some war situations drag on a little too long. The viewpoint is depicted through the eyes of German, Russian, Welsh and American characters, both rich and poor, aristocrat and peasant. Teeming with romance, betrayal and heartbreak, Fall of Giants is a compelling listen. Solid narrator; does all accents well, never annoying.

I took it to Mexico on my ereader and it was a great beach/pool read. I learnt alot of history about that time period.

Apparently the first in a planned trilogy of hefty tomes, this saga follows several diverse characters as they enter, endure, and ultimately survive the years surrounding WWI, the Russian Bolshevik Revolution, and women’s suffrage. I have no head for history, and when that rare author comes along that can keep me interested in a historical FICTION that also teaches me about my own world history – that is a plus. Follett’s gift is his ability to craft characters that we want to BE, especially his underdog heroes (Billy Twice, Ethel, etc). He does deal with human sexuality graphically, which some criticize – but perhaps it is these spots of carnal human fictionalization which make all the HISTORY palatable for me.
