From the beginning to the end, Robert Bresson’s masterpiece grips your mind with thrill and suspense. “A Man Escaped” is one of the greatest of all prison-break films, including Jacques Becker’s "Le Trou," John Sturges' "The Great Escape," Alan Parker’s “Midnight Express,” Don Siegel's "Escape from Alcatraz," and Frank Darabont’s “The Shawshank Redemption.” In Lyon of Nazis-occupied France, a French resistance leader tries to escape from the inescapable Montluc prison. Robert Bresson’s stoic mastery and cold-blooded realism make the leader’s desperate digging for freedom look sublime. This documentary-like film will never fail to offer a memorable movie experience to those who are greedy for both entertainment and artistic satisfaction.

For a director who uses scant emotional tricks- this film packs a big emotional wallop at the end ( or it did to me ).

Convicted of sabotage of a bridge during World War 2 the protagonist can expect to be executed by firing squad at any time. So the only possibility of life is by escape from prison. Fontaine is ingenious at creating tools and fashioning (and concealing) homemade ropes and grappling hooks to use in the escape. But he needs an accomplice to carry off the breakout. Whom can he trust?

Robert Bresson was one of the greatest of the modern French film directors. His style is that of providing the viewer with just the minimum of information and asking the viewer to use his mind to fill in the missing portions. While Bresson uses this style throughout each film, other directors use his methods occasionally in order to increase viewer suspense, interest and wonderment. This 2 disc set is great for those viewers that wish to view the interviews with Bresson and other directors who analyze Bressonian methods. “A Man Escaped” is one of the best prison escape movies ever released, although viewers addicted to “action and mayhem” might find it a little too methodical.
