Be very wary of revisionist book Empress Dowager Cixi by Jung Chang.
Empress Dowager Cixi seemed to read the Prince to stay in power to detriment of the empire.
This book more just the facts on the successive emperors in Chinese history.

Concise, easy to read, straightforward and gives the pro and con of every Chinese emperor up until 1911. In chronological order with excellent index makes this an enjoyable reference book as well.
