It wasn't such a good job, anyhow. He'd been teaching fifth grade in a second-rate private boys' school. Fifth grade wasn't even what he'd been trained for. Teaching wasn't what he'd been trained for. His degree was in philosophy. Oh, don't ask. Things seemed to have taken a downward turn a long, long time ago, and perhaps it was just as well that he had seen the last of St. Dyfrig's dusty, scuffed corridors and those interminable after-school meetings and the reams of niggling paperwork.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Joni. I usually enjoy Anne Tyler, but this book was boring and I found the protagonist pathetic and unlikeable. He needed to get a life. He did not, and the reader suffers.

Tyler's protagonist is an unsentimental emotionally detached survivor of two failed marriages. His relationships with his grown children have suffered from his inattentive nature and now he finds himself out of a job and the victim of a botched break-in while asleep in his new apartment. A curmudgeon with a heart that finally comes to life when he meets Eunice, a socially inept fashion disaster half his age. A funny, touching look at memory loss, aging, family life and the serendipitous nature of life and living.

Ann Tyler - there's just nobody like her and every single thing she's written is a wonderful thing to read and a warm, empathetic view of human-kind.

My dear Anne - you are such a good writer - your approach to your characters has changed , however . Gone are your funky , odd ball folks (Searching for Caleb , Accidental tourist ) and now we have us ordinary folk . Regardless , this was a good book

This book was too much like everyday life...and a little boring. It does not take us anywhere interesting in terms of landscape or people. It was too mundane for me.

This is a novel about aging and memory. Not great; not bad.

I always enjoy Anne Tyler--a descriptive style of everyday events.

I haven't read this yet but would like to.

This book was really slow. I thought the whole novel was cleverly summed up on the book jacket. I kept waiting for something else to happen.

A quick read but not a lot seemed to happen. A lot of time spent thinking about how things made the main character feel, which is never my favorite. Well written though, and perhaps just better suited to someone else.
