There's a lot of wit and heart to this book, set in 19th-century New England. When a one-armed orphan finally defies the odds and is adopted (for most families only want to adopt the obviously capable), he is extremely happy, particularly when the man who adopts him claims to be his long-lost brother.

Compelling story, but the plot dragged at points and the characters often seemed one-dimensional.

Clever and old fashioned

Against all odds, the elegant man picks one-handed Ren from the line-up of boys at Saint Anthony’s orphanage and claims him as his long lost brother. Of course, in this clever, old-fashioned, larger-than-life adventure, all is not as it seems. Now an accomplice to a con-artist, Ren utters Hail Marys across19th-century New England, narrowly escaping disaster as the risks escalate with the growing humour, farce, and charm. Fine storytelling that would make a great family read-aloud.

A twelve year old orphan is adopted by a young man claiming to be his brother. Ren hopes to find a family. But also looking an answer to how he came to be abandoned and whatever happened to the his left hand. Interesting story with many turns, (maybe too many). I found the narrative confusing at times.

Persistence paid off with this book. And heroes aren't always who or where you expect.
