An assignment to clean an Old Master at the home of a millionaire banker had led Gabriel Allon to a house in Zurich, and standing in the room now, he smelled the odor of salt and rust, felt the dampness of the carpet beneath his feet. He touched his fingers to the carpet and brought them to his face. He was standing in blood, and he knew his life would never be the same.

Eminently readable and a cut above as always and Silva takes pains to go into the war history concerning the missing art. Characters are well drawn and I find Gabriel's failure in his final mission in the book only adds authenticity to the tale. Too often in real life, the bad guys always win.

Great read as always and an interesting background on the Nazi art theft scandals which continue into the 21st century. A backhanded critique of the Swiss bank system which allowed this crime to continue as well as an expose of the self serving political system of the Swiss during WWII and their so-called neutrality in the war.
