This French film, dating from 1968, holds up remarkably well more than four decades later. While director Claude Chabrol is noted for his Hitchcock-influenced mysteries, this film is rather different. Here the plot consists of an unusual blend of psychological melodrama and social commentary.

Mostly interesting from a sheer style point of view, but well worth seeing for the iconic, icy beauty of Audran dressed head-to-toe in Nina Ricci, as well as the unabashed, unembarrassed Lesbianism. Like most Chabrol, there ain't much substance here, and comparisons to Hitchcock do him no favors. In this one, like his other "masterpiece" Le Boucher, we are forced to accept once again, that psychotics are just plain folks, and easily fit into the social order. (Yeah, sure). And what is all this about the cinematography? Most of the shots (especially the interiors) are just plain functional, and the camerawork uninspired. This, on the whole, will leave you yawning.
