In 2000, director Kinji Fukasaku unleashed BATTLE ROYALE, his violently poetic epic about an innocent group of Junior High students forced by the government to hunt and kill their classmates for sport. It was nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Awards, launched a global phenomenon, and banned from screens by frightened civic groups and distributors across America. Three years later, the equally disturbing sequel -- featuring a new class, new rules, and a brutal terrorist plot by the first film's young survivors -- triggered its own tragic firestorm around the world. Now for the first time ever, you can see it all: Experience the entire BATTLE ROYALE saga on 4 discs -- including more than 3 hours of definitive Special Features -- that forever blasts open one of the most potent, shocking and savagely influential sagas in motion picture history.

Beware of which disc you're getting. For some reason the library decided to get three copies of each DVD and have them separate dispersed at two different locations! Take care before you check it out.

Gotta say the movie is a spot on the manga and the movie but this did gave slight nightmares of some of my friends coming into my room and slitting my throat with a hoe.(Used in the movie by Mitsuko) Good bloody good came out the year I was born

The people who gave the world the rape of Nanking and Shanghai, the Bataan Death March and Kamakazi attacks on US shipping bring you this movie about some future, or now Japanese government who behaves the way Japanese behaved a lot half-century ago and never apologized. It's not particularly difficult to believe simply considering the culture of origin.

It's going be hard to not compare this to the Hunger Games, since the concept is very similar. The main difference between these films in this one, the kids are all from the same class, and have known each other for years. This heightens the "who can you trust" factor, and how friends can very easily turn on each other when it comes to survival. Not bad film.

Ahhh... the ORIGINAL hunger games. Except this one is amazing in concept. It's underlying political message is disturbing and frightening real. You have to watch it keeping that in mind. This is not a typical "hey lets watch a scary movie" film. It actually has a moral. And that moral is too frighteningly real.

Battle Royale is an excellent movie, albeit graphic from the get go. Very similar to the Hunger Games, even though this movie was done back in 2000. This copy had Battle Royale Requiem included, which I found to be a terrible movie. It tries to be idealistic without much point. The violence just distracts and seems very pointless.

A tedious horror film.

I hoped and expected more from this. The reason for the whole BR law seemed slight and mostly illogical/nonsensical. I was vastly confused by the beginning and end. The movie never manages to build any real suspense, most of the carnage is poorly shot so it's often unclear who has done what to whom, and without emotional hooks to make me care. Little bits of back story are occasionally dropped in, but they amount to nothing, not really adding to characters (there aren't really any, they're mostly types) and said back story attempts to flesh them out seem random, unconnected, too little, too late.
Not dreadful, but not really good either, most slasher movies manufacture scares and emotion better than this.
