A minimally researched but entertaining introduction to Adolf Hitler's life and crimes. Wilson is strong on exposing Hitler's ordinariness, and the craven, hero worshiping world that made him possible, but weak on everything else, partly because he relies on older sources. I was surprised to find this is a fairly recent book, rather than one written in the 1940s. Wilson seems to have a grudge against Winston Churchill (not that I totally disagree) -- airily assigning total blame for the failure of the Norwegian campaign to him here, blaming his "savage" response to the bombing of London for Hitler bombing civilian targets there. Either the author didn't know or ran out of space to say what the Nazis and their allies had already done in other countries. I would urge readers to look for longer, better books like The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, but if you're pressed for time, this is a good start. And if you want to save even more time, you can skip Wilson's summing up, which goes something like: you know who believed in abortion, vegetarianism, and giving children inexpensive typewriters? Hitler! So don't we, ordinary politically correct Jane or John Doe, have a little Hitler inside us? Yes, it's really that silly.

Absolutely horrible. First of all, 'Vanity Fair' is repeatedly listed in the end notes. I would not call VF a reliable historical source. Secondly, it states that Hitler was not a trench runner, then turns around and claims that he enjoyed hunting rats in the trench using his terrier. So he went to the trenches on vacation? The book also claims that Hitler was incapable of leading and was a bad orator. Wow, you could have fooled me.

Richard J Evans, a highly respected historian whose speciality is Hitler, has given this book a very poor review, saying that is it full of insistancies and outright errors.
