Based on an inspiring true story, this emotionally powerful crowd-pleaser emerged as one of the year's most talked about independent films. It's the fascinating and epic tale of Li Cunxin, a peasant boy from rural China who beats impossible odds to become a world-renowned ballet dancer. Through breathtaking talent and sheer determination, Li makes his way to the United States, but when he falls in love with an American woman, he must risk everything to remain in the land of the free.

Our second time watching. What a joy to see a really good movie with wonderful dancing and music. Would love to read the biography, but library don’t seem to have it.

Absolutely done in the most beautifull and exciting way so that one completely forgets one self and is living in the space and time of the story being told. I've rented the movie countless times, not just to watch the wonderful dance scenes, but to take in the feelings of different characters. Watching the brilliance of the dancing and costumes is thrilling and done to perfection. The ability to give feelings over the screen from fear, poverty, love, loyalty, generosity, trust etc makes movie going like it used to be back in my day. This is a must watch and thoroughly worth your while. Be sure to listen to Li Cunxin tell his story on a Youtube two part vid.

The colonial mindset espoused by this movie was a challenge to stomach. While I'm glad the protagonist had a good life, he made many irresponsible decisions that the movie glosses over.
